Resonance
Interactive light & sound installation, 2024
“Resonance,” a collaborative work by Hakan Gündüz and ha:ar, is an interactive light and sound installation that explores the ever-changing nature of light, perception, and space. It approaches the installation as a living organism that is constantly changing and evolving, interacting with its environment where light and sound exist in continuous dialogue. A luminous cone breathes in the darkness, deforming and reshaping itself through self-generated noise, to create an autonomous audiovisual organism that exists with or without human presence.
The visual language of Resonance draws from minimalist light art traditions while embracing the organic unpredictability of interactive systems. The work exists in a constant state of becoming; it is never the same twice, always responding to existing environmental interactions, creating unique formations.
The installation uses physical light as an interactive medium, with white light as its primary visual form. White light is actually made of all of the visible colours because it contains all wavelengths. This choice reflects a philosophical approach to totality and unity, suggesting that what appears singular contains infinite complexity.
When left alone, the installation performs for itself. The constantly changing shape of the light cone determines its sound, creating a tone that corresponds to its unique form in that moment. As both sound and shape evolve, the installation merges with its architectural surroundings.
When humans enter this ecosystem, they do not activate it; they simply become part of an ongoing process. Using thermal imaging, human warmth and movement become instruments within the system, that affect the movement and shape of the light and sound in real-time. The light cone refracts into subtle colour shifts, revealing the spectrum contained within. It resonates with its environment like a breathing entity of light.
